We just published our second analysis tool review - FMPerception. We believe that every FileMaker developer should be using an analysis tool whether it be BaseElements ( or Inspector Pro from Beeswax ( ) or FMPerception ( These tools will help your development and allow you to find errors and unused elements in your code that would otherwise be easily overlooked. They are well worth the price of admission. ccNonProfit can help your Discipleship and we even integrate with PlanningCenter. Yes, we are talking a lot about BaseElements itself, but the conversation is far reaching and fascinating. Marc has created a dedicated course for BaseElements available at Productive Computing University ( ) and brings his personal experience and expertise with this tool into the mix. In comparison, FMPerception is almost immediate and that is it's strength. FMPerception uses XML/XSLT processing to drill down into the DDR. That can take a long time, which is frustrating. We’re also joined by our regular guest Marc Larochelle from Productive Computing ( ). BaseElements, being an FileMaker database, has to load the DDR and build all of the related data sets before you can begin. Nick is the creator of BaseElements, a FileMaker analysis tool which has been around since 2006 and which is one of the preeminent analysis tools for FileMaker developers. Others might be better in some aspects - but FMPerception is by far the fastest, allowing to do DDR runs whenever we need one. GetField() allows a string: GetField (FirstName) will get the value in a field of the current table called FirstName. FMPerception has those flagged and highlighted specifically so you can find and resolve those quickly. ![]() Some functions, when used improperly, can cause performance issues. It shows the location of each instance of every function so you can easily track down uses. FMPerception includes here any function or script step that explicitly uses a string as a parameter to reference a FileMaker Pro object. FMPerception highlights every FileMaker function used inside your system. In this episode, we are joined by a very special guest, Nick Orr from Goya, in Australia ( ). In FMPerception, we define FileMaker indirection a bit more loosely.
